Our Story

There are thousands of human languages spoken across our planet. And beyond them, countless others.

Complex, ancient, and mysterious languages spoken throughout the non-human world: the chemical conversations of plants, the vast underground networks of fungi, the signaling of animals, the rhythms of the ocean, the intelligence embedded within ecosystems we are only beginning to understand.

We believe we carry an innate ability to communicate with these worlds. Somewhere along the way, we simply forgot how to listen.

Language exists to help translate.

We work with the powerful intelligence of the non-human world—fungi, plants, herbs, and other natural allies—and translate their offerings into forms the human body can understand and receive.

Because the more fluently we are able to communicate with the world we inhabit, the greater possibility we have for harmony within ourselves.

Each new word expands our vocabulary.
Each new language expands our understanding.

And with an expanded vocabulary, we unlock possibilities we may not yet have words for.

Founded by women, farmers, and herbalists, Language holds the wellbeing of the planet and the health of people with equal reverence.

We grow mushrooms. We carefully source herbs and ingredients from our neighbors. We believe the transformative support available throughout the non-human kingdoms should be approached with curiosity, translated with care, and offered with deep intention.

This work is not about extracting from nature. It is about learning from it.

Listening more closely. Remembering what we already know. And becoming fluent, once again, in the languages of the Earth.

Welcome to Language.

Our Guiding Principles

The way we make something matters as much as what we make.

  • We are students of the natural world, always listening, learning, and looking more closely.

Language is rooted in relationship—with the plants and fungi we work with, the people who cultivate them, the places they come from, and the hands that transform them. These principles guide the way we source, formulate, and make.

  • Our relationship with the natural world is not theoretical. It is lived.

We work with our hands, pay attention to seasons and cycles, and remain curious about the intelligence held within the living world. Our perspective is shaped by farming, herbalism, and a deep belief that there is still so much to learn.

  • Every ingredient has a story. We seek out exceptional mushrooms, herbs, flowers, and botanical oils from growers and suppliers we trust. We choose ingredients for their quality, integrity, and the unique properties they bring to each formulation.

  • We believe making is a form of listening. Our preparations are made in small batches, by hand and with intention. From infusing and blending to bottling and labeling, we stay close to the process. Working slowly allows us to pay attention to the details and make each preparation with care.

  • How we care for the Earth extends to how we package our work.

We choose simple, thoughtful packaging with reuse, recyclability, longevity, and material impact in mind. We avoid unnecessary layers and continually look for ways to make better choices.

Because the conversation doesn't end when the product leaves our hands.

About Our Farm

Before Language, There Was a Mushroom Farm.

Founded in Santa Rosa, California, KM Mushrooms began with a fascination for one of the most mysterious and intelligent kingdoms on Earth.

What started as curiosity became a practice—and eventually, a life's work.

Today, KM Mushrooms cultivates specialty mushrooms for select farmers markets throughout the Bay Area and wholesale partners through the FEED Cooperative.

Because before we could translate the languages of the more-than-human world, we had to learn how to listen.

Meet Amanda Janney

Language and KM Mushrooms are the work of Amanda Janney—a mushroom farmer, herbalist, educator, gardener, and lifelong student of the natural world.

For years, Amanda has immersed herself in the study and cultivation of fungi—not only learning how to grow them, but learning how to communicate their extraordinary complexity and relevance to others.

Through cooking classes and mushroom dinners, farmers market education, panels, lectures, and conversations with audiences of all ages and backgrounds, she has made the fascinating world of fungi more accessible—and more alive.

Highlights of Amanda's speaking career include the California Academy of Sciences, the Olympic Peninsula Fungi Festival, the Santa Cruz Mountain Mushroom Festival, and the Exploratorium, alongside mycology gatherings and community organizations throughout the West Coast.

Her approach to education is equal parts science, storytelling, and wonder.

Amanda has a particular gift for making the mysterious world of fungi accessible—translating complex biological systems into experiences that leave people not only more knowledgeable, but more inspired than when they arrived.

That instinct to translate eventually moved beyond education and into medicine making. Amanda began exploring how mushrooms could be prepared as tinctures, creating new ways for people to incorporate fungi into their daily lives and making their potential benefits more accessible beyond the dinner table.

What began as mushroom medicine making opened the door to a much broader world of plants, preparations, and traditional practices. Drawn deeper into the intelligence of the botanical world, Amanda pursued formal training in herbalism, expanding her understanding of the relationships between plants, fungi, the human body, and the many ways medicine can be prepared and shared.

This evolution—from cultivation, to education, to medicine making—became part of the foundation for Language.

But mushrooms are only one part of a much larger conversation.

A trained herbalist and avid gardener, Amanda has spent her life drawn toward the natural rhythms of the world: the intelligence of ecosystems, the cycles of death and renewal, and the quiet abundance that emerges when we learn to work with nature rather than against it.

She has dedicated her life's path to understanding what it means to live in right relationship with the extraordinary place we get to call home.

Because abundance, health, and joy are our birthright.

And often, the answers that help us unlock them are already written into the world around us—in the plants, the fungi, the soil, and the countless other beings with whom we share this planet.

We only have to learn how to read them.

Amanda is available for select speaking engagements, panels, workshops, private cultivation classes, and team experiences.

Whether speaking to scientists, curious beginners, corporate teams, students, or fellow nature lovers, Amanda brings depth, warmth, humor, and an infectious sense of wonder to every room.
